INTRODUCTION

During the year 2016, the shipping industry faced historically low freight rates and excess container capacity. Despite investing heavily in its different operating segments , leading shipping firm A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S (Maersk) found itself struggling. The company reported revenues of USD27.26 billion in 2016, down from USD34.8 billion in 2014. Revenue growth over the previous decade (2006-2016) had been nearly flat, primarily as a fall-out of the global economic crisis of 2008, even though Maersk’s efforts to take out costs and optimize businesses had made its group companies the best performing in their respective segments..
